DIY facial

I don't know about you, but lately I've been in need of some serious pampering. Unfortunately, rent was due last week (and the rest of the bills) so splurging on the mani-pedi-facial I've been dreaming of wasn't really an option.

I decided to take a tip from one of my favorite blogs, DIY Bride. I know what you're thinking "always a bridesmaid...never a bride," but I really do LOVE this site! Anyway, that's beside the point.

I figured that if I can't afford to go out and treat myself to relaxing treatments at a luxurious spa, that I would just find a way to re-create them at home. Hence the DIY (do it yourself). So last night during the commercial breaks of the MTV VMAs, I whipped up my own little version of a facial.

I started by removing all my makeup including the long-wear eyeliner that I think may have been leftover from Saturday night... ;)

Next, I used a gentle polishing scrub to exfoliate and get rid of the dead skin cells that build up over time.  TIP: they say you should do this twice a week to prevent build-up and continuously reveal fresher, younger-looking skin.

After rinsing away all those tiny little exfoliating beads, I applied a moisturizing mask. I think I left this on a little too long (Rhianna was performing and I didn't want to miss a minute!) but after I rinsed it off, my skin felt incredible!

I then applied my new favorite product, Time Defiance Illuminating Essence, for some serious luminousity and a gorgeous glow. After a quick application of heavy night creme, I was done! Much quicker than any facial treatment I've ever received at a spa and the results were just as nice.

So next time you're in the mood for a bit of pampering, get creative and try it at home. Do you have any DIY beauty tips you want to share? Fill me in and stay tuned because I'll be experimenting with more DIY alternatives coming soon!

Hi Jessica!

Thanks for the tip! What moisturizing mask do you recommend? And would you recommend it for oily skin?

I love the Artistry Moisture Intense Masque (for my super dry skin.) If you have combination-to-oily skin, try the Artistry Pore Cleansing Masque. Let me know what you think!

For a luxurious DIY body spa treatment, I use the Artistry Spa Collection - body wash, sugar scrub and moisture souffle. I first soak in a hot shower [or you can do a bath if you prefer], then I wash with the silky body wash. That alone leaves your skin soft and refreshed. But then I rub in a generous amount of the sugar scrub everywhere, concentrating on my knees, elbows and my neck for a DIY massage =) It feels GREAT and it even heats up a little on contact. When you wash that off, you will feel amazing. And as soon as I step out of the shower, I rub in a generous amount of the moisture souffle all over and I feel like I just had an amazing spa treatment =) ITS GREAT!

Sounds fantastic! Have you ever tried the Sugar Scrub on your feet? I use it once in a while on my feet to buff away all the dry skin...it works like a charm!

I am definately going to try both of these DIY treatments.  Jess, do you have any tips for removing eye make-up?  I have Artistry make up remover, but what is the best way to get eye liner and mascara off?  I always feel like I'm being too hard on my eyes - and I definately don't want to encourage any more wrinkles:)

Hey Kate! Sometimes regular eye makeup remover just doesn't cut it. That's when I bust out my backup plan and use a little bit of baby oil on a cotton ball. It swipes the makeup away gently without having to rub my eyelids till my lashes fall out! Try it out and let me know what you think. ;)

Hi Kate,

I use cold cream to remove my mascara and eyeliner. I put it on like I do regular eye cream and remove it with a cotton pad. What do you think Jess, is that ok too? I never thought about whether cold cream was ok to use on your eyes.

I think this sounds like a great (and soothing) way to wipe away that mascara at the end of the day. Thanks for the tip!

I love using the Sugar Scrub on my feet!!! Actually, it's one of my husbands guilty pleasures. Every once in a while, when I'm in a giving mood, I'll use the whole set on his feet. I'll wash them, sugar scrub them and then massage in the moisture souffle. He loves it!!

Talk about love! You win the "wife of the year" award!
